After
moving into a brand new home in Bristol, the new owner received a
mysterious package on his doorstep. Assuming it was simply forwarded
mail from his old address or a welcome present from one of his new
neighbors, the man opened the package with delight.
Unfortunately, a
massive tarantula leaped from the parcel and straight for him.
The
spider, a Brazilian Salmon Pink Bird-eater, was bound for the previous
owner of the home, but had ‘return to sender’ written across the package
clearly. The box, however, lay unopened for three weeks. The Brazilian
Salmon Pink Bird-eater is the third largest species of tarantula known
to man. Its legs can grow up to 11 inches long.
The man, worried
about the spider, took it to Highcroft Veterinary Group in Whitchurch,
Bristol, to have it looked over. The vets there said it was highly ill.
Sonya Miles, one of the vets, said: “It is common to send insects
and some living creatures via the post, as long as they are clearly
labelled in accordance with the postal service being used. Although the
package did adhere to all the regulations, it was just an unlucky
situation that resulted in it not being collected by its intended
owners.”
The spider, newly named Sid, is recuperating at North Somerset Reptile Rescue, and is in search of a new owner.
